The day started with a spitting rain and thick fog, almost thick enough to keep crews from their morning runs on the ocurse. It keeps the water flat, however, and the conditions are superb for racing.
Races go off every seven minutes, making for a fairly hectic pace for coverage; doing my absolute best. These reports should not in any way substitute for the official results; I will most likely not register any protests or the like until later.
Racing in reverse order, as each race goes off:
Additional racing:
A power outage here in the press tent caused me to be offline this morning; I hope everyone was able to find the results. I'm finally settled in here, and all should go well henceforth.
The results would indicate some extremely close races for spots in the A finals, and indeed there were some barnburners.
Immediately after I was offline, the US and Canada engaged in a ferocious battle for a spot in the final for the LW 4-; the .32 margin was consistent for most of the last 200 meters. The US crew edged out just before the finish line.
In subsequent races, margins were hotly contested, if not nearly as tight, as you can see from results, until the men's 8+ reps. The first three crews in the first rep finished within 1.04 seconds, first to third, with two to the final; GBR and RUS went through, with the Netherlands crew going to the B final. In the second and final rep, the US and Canada engaged in another North America border war in the Men's 8+; the 1.7 second margin developed only in the last 150 meters, although the GER-USA-CAN order of finish was in place sometime in the 3rd 500.
HPL2x: (LW men's 2x, four reps top 2 to semi for AB finals; 3 to semi for CD final)
rep 1:Australia dominated this race, with South Africa in second, Russia in third, and several lengths behind, Peru and Singapore.
rep 2: France established an early and convincing lead in this race, with the contest for second trading places between the US and Canada several times, although the Canadians soon faded, with the Irish moving into the third position.
France won by quite a bit, with the US open water ahead of the Irish, and the Canadians well off the Irish crew, having faded once the finals were out of reach.
rep 3: the Swedish crew was out of the starting gates like a scalded dog, as the famed comment goes. After the settle, the GBR crew pulled up to the Swedish crew, and seemed poised to go through them
FPL2x LW women's 2x one rep, top 3 to semifinal
This one is spreading out, with 2-3 seconds between each crew in this order at th 1500: Italy, Greece, Poland, Japan, China. Japan, however, staged at fierce late charge, rowing through the Polish crew to get the third position by a couple inches.
H4+ (men's 4+) four of five to A final
this is a tremendosouly fierce race, with less than 2 seconds sepaating all crews at the 1000m mark. Coming into the 250 to, only Croatia seemed unable to go with the other crews, with GBR in the lead, the USA moving into second in the third 500. At the finish, there was NO WAY to tell who qualified. Only China fails to qualify, with the GBR in the lead; 12" from 2 to fourth, with China another 6" behind.
HPL4x (LW4x) two reps, top 2 to final A
Rep 1: Germany ominated this race with an open water victory, with Greece in the second qualifying position, not quite open water ahead of the Austrian boat, followed by Spain.
Rep 2 (three boat race): led by the US crew throughout, from shortly after the start. The race for the second qualifying position is fierce between Denmark and Japan; race not ended yet.
FPL4x one rep only, four of five to A final
This was a four-boat race after about 750 meters gone, with the leaders crossing the finish line within two seats total from first to fourth, and only Spain out of the running.
GBR, SWE, NED and USA qualify.
HPL2-
Will need to catch up with these events; did see that the US 2- raced in fourth position for most of the race, out of the semis, and put in a tremendous sprint to row through and open up nearly open water over the 4th place (three to qualify). sorry for the US-centric nature of the report, but these are friends of mine.
